SNL at 40

Back in 1975 nobody would of imagined the impact Saturday Night Live would have on television and popular culture. Forty years later the show is still on the air, and next week Lorne Michaels is celebrating with a 40th Anniversary Special. The three hour show looks to be a treat with a long list of stars returning to Studio 8H. Lorne and members of the five-timers club also have graced the cover of The Hollywood Reporter this week. Check out the cover and the stars who will be on the 40th special down below. 25562DEC00000578-2940280-image-a-88_1423088844700 Clockwise from bottom left: Alec Baldwin, Elliott Gould, Michaels, Tom Hanks, Chevy Chase, Christopher Walken, Steve Martin and Paul Simon.

The war for 7.30: Reality rivals go head to head

Every year the three major networks bring out the big guns early to go and get the lead on the competition. For the past few years, Channel Seven’s My Kitchen Rules has been unstoppable, and this year has been no different. The past three nights MKR has had bigger ratings than The Block (on Channel Nine) and I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here (Network Ten) combined. It is well noted though that MKR’s viewership drops off once the home restaurant rounds are over, meaning viewers could head over to Ten’s I’m A Celeb, giving them the ratings winner the truly need.

Celeb started out well on Sunday night when it was up against sport on opposing stations. The premiere and big reveal of celeb’s pulled 1.2 million, but has dropped every night since rating 0.75 on Monday, 0.68 on Tuesday and 0.58 last night. While they have been dropping fast, they haven’t been far behind The Block each night, so if you can’t get gold, try for silver?

The Block which premiered the week before to try and hold onto viewers, has had low numbers, even in the week with MKR not on. Monday night only 0.8 tune in, Tuesday 0.73, and Wednesday 0.68. Much lower than what the show used to do when not going head to head with MKR.

MKR has pulled in over a million in each of its first three nights. 1.59 million on Monday, 1.4 on Tuesday, and last night they saw better ratings than the premier 1.67 million watching.

Can Celeb and The Block gain some viewers, or will MKR steamroll to another rating victory once again this year?

Chrissie Swan for The Project?

Will Chrissie Swan go from the jungle to a seat on The Project? Anything is possible after she was dropped from the KISS Network (formerly Mix Network), even when her breakfast show with Jane Hall was doing incredibly well up against Nova and Fox FM. With Carrie Bickmore’s due date getting closer, Ten will need somebody to take over the role.

Swan, who first rose to fame at Network Ten over a decade ago on Big Brother, is currently one of the celeb’s that have been flown to South Africa for I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here, and with her evident popularity on social media over the first two nights, it looks like she may make it to the end, and win the whole thing.

Six weeks on our screens could give Swan a leg up on other competitors for the job. Sydney Confidential are reporting that other choices are Gorgi Coughlan, Fifi Box, and Natasha Belling. All three have been on The Project, but Gorgi is a regular fill in, which would make it easy for her to slip into the role. What ever happens, Carrie will be missed while she is away (if you want to hear about why I think Carrie is amazing click right here), and I’m sure no matter who steps in, The Project will be the same funny, entertaining, and informative program that it has been for the last five years.

Eliza Orlins (9 & 16)
Kass McQuillen (28)

2K15: What I’m Looking Forward To In The Pop Culture World

Films

The Force Awakens (December)
The hype for this film is massive. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen the amount of press and speculation about a film in my life time. The first thought I had when another trilogy was announced was, if this goes bad, it’s gonna be really bad. As in, Star Wars fans take things super seriously, and something tiny could ruin the film for them. But so far, everyone has been super positive about it, which is a good sign.

Age of Ultron (July)
The first Avengers film took me by surprise. At the time I hadn’t seen any of the five Marvel films that had proceeded it, but I absolutely loved it. And as most sequels go, this one will be bigger and better. On the flip side, some sequels are terrible, but that won’t be the case with this one. With the incredible Joss Whedon in charge we have nothing to worry about. Plus he has been taking inspiration from The Empire Strikes back, only the greatest sequel of all time.

Music

Songs of Experience (Probably not even 2015, more like 2018, because this is U2, right?)
The most hated album of the year was one of my favourites, and ever since Bono mentioned a follow up, I’ve been wanted more from U2.

untitled 7th Kanye album (some time soon)
All through out 2014, there was meant to be a new Kanye West album. We got to end of the year and we had nothing. Now in 2015, it’s looking like a full album will be coming sooner rather than latter, now that a new single “Only One” with Paul McCartney has been released.

TV

Game Of Thrones (April)
The worlds most downloaded show is back again. While I like shows with shorter seasons like Thrones (10 episodes a season), the ten month gap is painful. Luckily the wait is close to over.

Parks & Recreation (January)
NBC’s last decent comedy is nearly over, and they will be missed by many. Blink and you might miss the final season as it will be all over by the end of Febuary. Then all we will have is our memories Lil Sebastian (RIP Lil Sebastian).
