In A Billy Joel State Of Mind

I put on Billy Joel’s The Stranger for the first time, and I scroll through twitter. Multiple people are tweeting about the paino man himself. Turns out he was singing at the World Series, and it wasn’t some kind of Billy Joel appreciation day.

That night I’m watching Freaks and Geeks, and what do you know, Rosalinda’s Eyes start playing.

Taylor Swift Has The Grammy For Album Of The Year All Wrapped Up

Come January next year, Taylor shouldn’t have another moment like this:

Looking at the albums that came out between October 1st 2014 and September 20th 2015, nothing compares to the ground breaking and record making 1989. The album was the first album in ten years to make one million in its first week, and currently has spawned four hit singles, with three of them going number one.

Looking over the past year the most likely competitors to 1989 could be Sonic Highways, Foo Fighters; Uptown Special, Mark Ronson; To Pimp A Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar; and Rebel Heart, Madonna.

So can we already pencil in a win for Taylor to avenge her RRRRandom Access Memories moment?

Bad Blood Gives Swift Fourth Number One

Bad Blood has quickly risen to the top of the Billboard charts, knocking of “See You Again” which hadn’t moved for six weeks.

The video for the song featuring Taylor’s Hollywood friends broke Vevo records within 24 hours of release at the Billboard Music Awards.

This is her third No. 1 from the album after “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space”. Third single “Style” peaked at No. 6.

Zayn Malik quits One Direction

“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologize to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.”

You want to have a normal life? What TV did you sign up for? The one where you compete to be known by millions? That’s cool. take your money and run. It’s not normal for twenty two years olds to have the cash that you have, but if you want to be “normal”, so be it.

The Life and Times of Kanye West

While we never go to long without hearing from the Chicago born rapper, there has been a influx of news pieces on Kanye West after his opinions on who should of won Album of the Year at the Grammys. Here’s what he’s been saying in the last week:

Kanye and Taylor Swift, who are now apparently pals and have put the past behind them, are planning to record together, and it looks like Taylor was the one to reach out to him. Here’s what he said in a interview with Ryan Seacrest: “Yeah, she wants to get in the studio and we’re definitely going to go in. Any artist with an amazing point of view, perspective, fan base, I’m down to get in the studio and work. I don’t discriminate, I don’t have an elitism of music because of like how many Grammys or you know, the amount of ratings you get on an album. I that think everyone loves music whether they love hip-hop, alternative, country, and if I could be involved in giving people any type of energy, advice in the studio, whether you’re Beyonce, whether you’re Taylor Swift, whether you’re Jay Z, whether you’re Beck, whoever, and they can be reciprocal with that, I’d like to be involved with that.”

In that same interview we also leant that he blames the voices inside his head for nearly interrupting Beck’s acceptance speech. “What I really wanted to do was joke around with what had happened before, but I didn’t want to take away from Beck’s moment or the time he had to talk…so I just walked back down. It was kind of a joke, like the Grammys themselves.” He also compared losing at the Grammy’s for him was like his wife Kim getting a divorce to her second husband.

This week his daughter was highlighted on social media for crying at his fashion event. While one would think it might be due to all the bright lights, or having to sit in the same spot for a long period of time, or just for know reason at all, because she is a toddler, right? Nope, it was because she could tell people were being mean to Kanye. “Maybe she was just scared for her daddy. She just wanted people to stop being mean to her daddy. Because she knows that her daddy loves the world and just wants to make it a more beautiful place.” That’s right everyone. North West, eighteen months old. Peace activist.

That’s it for now, but this is Kanye West, so check back in a few weeks, and no doubt there will be more to report on.

2K15: What I’m Looking Forward To In The Pop Culture World

The Force Awakens (December)
The hype for this film is massive. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen the amount of press and speculation about a film in my life time. The first thought I had when another trilogy was announced was, if this goes bad, it’s gonna be really bad. As in, Star Wars fans take things super seriously, and something tiny could ruin the film for them. But so far, everyone has been super positive about it, which is a good sign.

Age of Ultron (July)
The first Avengers film took me by surprise. At the time I hadn’t seen any of the five Marvel films that had proceeded it, but I absolutely loved it. And as most sequels go, this one will be bigger and better. On the flip side, some sequels are terrible, but that won’t be the case with this one. With the incredible Joss Whedon in charge we have nothing to worry about. Plus he has been taking inspiration from The Empire Strikes back, only the greatest sequel of all time.

Songs of Experience (Probably not even 2015, more like 2018, because this is U2, right?)
The most hated album of the year was one of my favourites, and ever since Bono mentioned a follow up, I’ve been wanted more from U2.

untitled 7th Kanye album (some time soon)
All through out 2014, there was meant to be a new Kanye West album. We got to end of the year and we had nothing. Now in 2015, it’s looking like a full album will be coming sooner rather than latter, now that a new single “Only One” with Paul McCartney has been released.

Game Of Thrones (April)
The worlds most downloaded show is back again. While I like shows with shorter seasons like Thrones (10 episodes a season), the ten month gap is painful. Luckily the wait is close to over.

Parks & Recreation (January)
NBC’s last decent comedy is nearly over, and they will be missed by many. Blink and you might miss the final season as it will be all over by the end of Febuary. Then all we will have is our memories Lil Sebastian (RIP Lil Sebastian).

Reasons Why U2 Aren’t As Bad As You Think

Okay so everyone knows about how two months ago U2 dumped their album onto everyone’s phone, in an apparent violation of privacy, and on came the enormous amount of hate. Well I’m here to try and let you know they are cooler than you think.

Reason #1 – Influenced many bands you love today – You like Coldplay, The Killers, Oasis, Snow Patrol, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon or 30 Seconds To Mars.? Well they have all been influenced by U2 in one way or another. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is a massive fan, claiming U2 is the only band whose entire back catalog he knows by heart, and telling Rolling Stone that “A Sort Of Homecoming” from The Unforgettable Fire is the first song he played to his unborn baby.

Reason #2 – Product RED – Ever seen a red iPod and found it strange since Apple usually use really bright colours, when this would of been a deep red. That would of been due to it being made in partnership with Product Red. Wikipedia explains Product Red as a licensed brand that seeks to engage the private sector in raising awareness and funds to eliminate HIV/AIDS in Africa. Co-founded by U2 frontman Bono, they have partnered with Nike, Apple Inc. Starbucks, and Penguin Classics to raise funds. Earlier this year U2 released a new song during the Superbowl that could be downloaded for free over a twenty four hour period (they didn’t “force” it onto your phone, so nobody was having a major whinge). This was done in partnership with Banks of America who would donate $1 for every download to (RED). In the end $3,138,470 was donated.

Reason #3 – You know more U2 songs than you know – Most will claim to know nothing about U2, because it’s ‘old music’, but if their greatest hits were being played, a lot of young people would recognise the tunes. With Or Without You, One, Beautiful Day, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Vertigo, Where The Streets Have No Names, Sweetest Thing, and City of Blinding Lights. There is eight songs, so many you will all know (and maybe even enjoy), but you will all claim to dislike the band. (more…)

No new album from Beyonce, but let’s enjoy 1989

Disappointment has settled in now. Yes two new Beyonce tracks are better than none, but a new album would of been even better. I was already preparing to spend the rest of November and December switching between Beyonce Vol 2 and 1989, but Bey since you’ve left us hanging, 2014 (well the latter half) is all about Taylor Swift.

You can expect 1989 to stay atop of the Billboard 200 for the rest of the year, something other artists have struggled to do. Only the Frozen and Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks, and Beyonce’s self titled visual album, have spent multiple stays at the top this year.

So while I am disappointed that no extra Beyonce, I can be grateful for such an amazing album from Taylor. She has just released her second single, “Black Space”, and I really think this album will be massive, and the songs have the power to get her heard on the radio through to her next album. If I was in charge of what happens next, here is what I would put forward as singles off the album.

BAD BLOOD – July 15
